Large-scale interference pattern by intersection of two orthogonal fold-and-thrust structural trends. (Dolomites, Southern Alps)

Folds
The Marmolada-Vernel thrust system superimposed on the Contrin-San Nicolò-Lagusel diapiric anticline visible in cross-section.
Thrusting is consistent with Paleogene alpine orogenetic compressions directed toward the observer (SW). The diapiric nucleus and ladinian magmatic dikes cutting the folded beds suggest a middle Triassic age for the ENE-WSW trending fold.
